About Green Empowerment
social justice * sustainability * local leadership
What We Do
Green Empowerment partners with rural communities and non-profit organizations in the developing world to create renewable energy and water systems that alleviate poverty and improve the
environment. We currently work in Nicaragua, the Philippines, Peru, Ecuador, and along the
Thailand/Burma border.
Why We’re Here
- 1.6 billion people worldwide live in the dark.
- Waterborne disease is the #1 cause of preventable death in the developing world and primarily affects children less than 5 years of age.
- Every year, deaths related to indoor air pollution kill more people than malaria (1.2 million) and tuberculosis (1.6 million) globally. Access to energy and/or biogas can prevent this.
Green Empowerment envisions an
equitable and sustainable
world, where everyone has access to
the basic needs of water and power
from renewable energy.
How We Work
By providing and assisting in the development of sustainable technologies (hydro, solar, wind, and
biomass energy), we empower impoverished communities to:
- Pump water for consumption and agriculture
- Provide lighting and power for schools, clinics and community centers
- Supply energy for productive activities, such as crop processing or small businesses
- Offer lighting and electricity for domestic uses
- Foster environmental conservation, watershed restoration, and community self-sufficiency
